207. Antiquity behind Beauty Spot

Always wonder why mom used to keep a spot with black kohl, on my cheek or towards left of left eye. She always said its a beauty spot which makes you look more beautiful and keeps you away from evil eyes. I had this spot throughout childhood in my make up. And gradually stopped keeping it myself.

Surprisingly I never thought of it until few days back when I heard about Roman’s were using patches. History says the beauty patches are ancient. They are used from Egyptian times, initially its used to hide the scars and patches on their faces. As time passed, (considered from 18th century) the functional purpose of patches turned into fashion.

Initially  taffeta was used to make little plasters and was cut into different shapes.  Shapes were the crescent moon, the star, different flowers, and even animals or people.  The face looked like a shadow-play performance.

Their positions on the face varied.  There were, however, some favourite places.  The seven principal ones were:  at the corner of the eye, la passionnee;  la galante, in the middle of the cheek;  la baiseuse, at the corner of the mouth;  on a pimple, la receleuse;  on the nose, l’effrontee;  la coquette, on the lips.  A round patch was called l’assassine.  At one time, women wore patches circled with diamonds on their right temple.

206. Freaking Corset

I recently discovered Cathie Jung’s corset in one of my classes. It is so shocking to believe that someone have a 15” waist. Yes its totally true, the smallest waist belongs to Cathie Jung (USA, b. 1937), who stands at 1.72 m (5 ft 8 in) and has a corseted waist measuring 38.1 cm (15 in). Un-corseted, it measures 53.34 cm (21 in).

Her interest in Victorian dresses and corsets inspired her to do this on aging 70 years old body. I feel it as ironic and extreme experiment to prove one’s enthusiasm over Victorian dresses :/

178. The Power of Colour In Your Brand Story

1

storyfountain

Ever wondered if there is  a colour associated with success in business?

Could use of colour really influence the fortunes of companies, and might it be true that companies of similar size, industry sector or even geography tend to use the same colours in their corporate identity and branding? The answer is yes, yes, and yes.

The evidence comes in a beautiful and elegant piece of graphic design work I stumbled across at the degree show of students from the Central St Martins School of Art in London.  I was blown away by a beatifully-produced display from  Kwang-Hyun (Sean) Ahn from Korea.  The work of his   one-man band called Akha is visible  on http:cargocollective.com/ahka1203.

 (email: akha1203@gmail.com)

This work builds on some  old ideas. The artist Wassily Kandinsky, during his time as a teacher at the Bauhaus art school, experimented with  associations between pure colours and shapes back in the late…

177. Modular Tile Design

Modular pattern design seems so simple that many people don’t even consider. Yet its one of the best way of expressing your style. Designing patterns are always endless each can give dramatically a different look and feel.
Till I started doing this modular design project, I was in same perception that it is simple. It is not simple as it looks. Coming up with new and unique design which competes and beats the regular design is challenging. It took almost 8 hours to come up with my final design. Another big challenging part comes in choosing the colors which goes best with each design element of the tile in the same time enhancing each tile. Once after the colors finalised, its really a big task filling the colors with equal and even spread. I used scotch drafting tape to avoid patchy fill. Finally it took 16 hours with breaks to complete the filling part. This is a huge tough project which looks easy and simple.
